Dr. David SandovalName/department/educational background: Dr. David. A. Sandoval. I took a BS from Eastern New Mexico University, a MA from Southern Methodist University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. What has been your greatest success in writing? (Personal writing, collaborative writing, completing a project or book, etc.) I have written extensively about Chicanos as well as the Santa Fe Trail. My dissertation was over “Manitos on the Santa Fe Trail, 1821-1846” as I wanted to see how Anglos and Mexicans got along before a war changed that relationship and I used the Santa Fe Trail as the prism to view that relationship. I have published many articles on the Santa Fe Trail and served as a Co-Chair of the Santa Fe Trail Advisory Council, appointed by the Secretary of the Interior under Reagan, Don Hodell. Out of that Council came the comprehensive plan for the Trail.

What do you struggle with in writing and how do you tackle that challenge? I struggle with active versus passive styles.

What’s your favorite book of all time? Author? I have no single book favorite of all time, but I really enjoy the writing of Marc Simmons.

What are you currently reading? Author? “ASurvey of American History” by Alan Brinkley.

What’s your favorite guilty reading pleasure, an easy, “beach” read? Time magazine.

Do you have a favorite word or quotation and who is the author? I have many, but the one I enjoy the most is “Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead,” David Farragatt. Or Davy Crockett, “Make sure of what you are doing and then go ahead and do it.”
