AAEEO candidates come to campus
December 5th, 2007 by Today StaffCandidates who are applying for the Affirmative Action and Equal Employee Opportunity Director position will be visiting the university.
Scott Williams is from Pueblo and LaNeeca Wiliams is from Indiana; more than 30 people applied for the position and the screen and search committee is headed by Fred Stultz, the director of the Student Counseling Center.
“The goal is to hire the best candidate for the job but it’s important to look in a large and diverse pool,” Stutlz said.
As a student representative, Andrew Lasher junior pre-business major, participated in every step of the screening process, despite his academic obligations.
The new hire’s role is important and it will ensure the university is meeting federal and state affirmative action and equal employment opportunities regulations. Duties will entail receiving discrimination and harassment complaints from students and employees. After the complaint is made, the new hire will conduct interviews and analyze the evidence.
Upon hiring, he or she will report directly to President Joseph Garcia for the affirmative action portion of the job. For instance, if current employees want to file grievances or if someone feels they did not get the position because of discrimination, they would meet with the new hire to file a complaint.
In addition to the AA/EEO duties, the new hire will be in charge of ensuring the university is meeting their diversity goals.
For issues dealing with the student code of conduct, the new hire will have to report to Zav Dadabhoy, dean of Student Life and Development.
“If someone shows up drunk at the dorms, they will have to deal with the resident hall assistants and eventually meet with the new hire,” Stultz said.
The tour will start at 8 a.m. The candidates will meet and have breakfast with the search and screen committee at the President’s Dining Room. From 9:30- 10:30 a.m. the candidates will be taking a campus tour followed by a meeting with the academic deans and directors at the Provost’s Conference Room.
Lunch follows from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Next, they will head to the President’s Office and meet with the president from 1-2 p.m. Williams had his tour on Mon., Dec. 3, while Wiliams will have her tour on Thurs., Dec. 6.
The candidates will be briefed on their benefits-upon being hired and meet with Dadabhoy. It will close with an open forum available to students, faculty and staff at the Blue Spruce from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
The position pays $65,000 and the start date hasn’t been determined at this point.
