Department of higher education to visit campus

David Skaggs, executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, will participate in a variety of forums and meetings at

CSU-Pueblo during a two-day visit to Pueblo Nov. 26-27.

As part of his visit to Pueblo next week Skaggs will tour the CSU-Pueblo campus, teach a class, meet with President Joseph Garcia and hold a forum with faculty and staff on Monday.

Garcia and Pueblo Community College President J.D. Garvin will co-host a town hall meeting at 5 p.m. at the El Pueblo History Museum, 301 N. Union Ave., during which Skaggs will discuss current higher education funding, the future of higher education and how it relates to CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo Community College and the local community.

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter nominated Skaggs to serve as executive director of the Department of Higher Education and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education where he has served since January of 2007.

The Department has coordinating and oversight authority for all Colorado’s public institutions of post-secondary education, licenses and regulates private occupational schools and manages the state’s student loan program and tax-exempt tuition savings plans.

Skaggs served as the Second Congressional District representative for 12 years (1987-99). Before that he served in the Colorado House from 1981-87 and was chief-of-staff to then-Congressman Timothy Wirth from 1974-77.

He is the founder and executive director of the Center for Democracy & Citizenship at the Council for Excellence in Government. A decorated Marine, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University in 1964 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967.

On Monday, November 26th Skaggs will meet with Garcia from 10-10:30 a.m. in Administration 301, he will take a campus tour from 10:30-11 a.m., at 11 a.m. he will participate in an editorial board meeting with the Pueblo Chieftain, from 12-1:15 p.m. a Rotary Luncheon at La Renaissance will be held, at 2 p.m. Skaggs will hold a Lecture in History 300 (Histriography) Class in Psychology 223, at 3 p.m. an Open Forum for Faculty, Staff and Students will take place in the OUC Blue Spruce Room and at 5-6:30 p.m. a Town Hall Meeting will be held at El Pueblo History Museum, co-hosted by Garcia and Pueblo Community College President J.D. Garvin
