Students find resources, door prizes at majors fair
September 30th, 2007 by Today Staff
A respectable showing of undeclared or students who were unsure of their major sought help Wednesday at the Majors Fair.
The fair took place in the ballroom of the Ochiatto Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Each department was represented with a booth or display to help offer information to potential students in the hopes of giving them a major to pursue.
“People have come through here to speak to us and there’s been success at a lot of the tables,” said Katie Gonzales, an economics and finance major who helped with the event.
An estimated 20 departments were present including Chemistry, The Hassan School of Business, mass communications, political science, social work, the Army and many others.
Pam Chambers, the associate director of student academic services, organized the fair with help from Director of Student Academic Services Sharon Hatton-Montoya.
“I wanted to do a Majors Fair to give the first year students an opportunity to meet their departments. Right now they’re being advised by personal advisors, but they need to have as much contact with their departments as they can before they are actually advised so it’s not a new or strange person,” Chambers said.
“Also, it’s for students who are undeclared and it gives them an opportunity to go around to the departments and it might help them declare a major.”
Several deans made an appearance to support their departments, including Hector Carrasco of the College of Education, Engineering and Professional Studies.
Cookies, refreshments and door prizes were available.
Door prizes included an iPod shuffle and gift certificates to Loaf n’ Jug and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Chambers was pleased with the outcome and plans on bringing the fair back next year.
