January 23rd, 2008 by CSU-Pueblo External Affairs

Colorado State University - Pueblo students will participate in Focus the Nation, an unprecedented teach-in on global warming solutions during an all-day event on January 31.

CSU-Pueblo student organization Students for Environmental Awareness and the Office of Student Activities will host a day of events, including panel presentations by community and faculty members. Students also will be involved as educators as they set up informational booths along with several local businesses and non-profit organizations committed to protecting the environment. At the end of the day, the school has invited local and regional civic leaders to engage in the Green Democracy round-table discussion on global warming solutions for America, focusing on what Pueblo can do.

“Today’s college students are truly the greatest generation,” says Lewis & Clark professor of economics Dr. Eban Goodstein, author and project director for Focus the Nation. “No other generation has ever had to face this kind of civilizational challenge. And we as educators would be failing if we did not prepare them to meet this challenge.”

The teach-in will kick off the night of Jan. 30 with the 2% Solution web cast co-produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network. Panelists will include Stanford climate scientist Steve Schneider, Hunter Lovins, CEO, Natural Capitalism and environmental justice leader, Van Jones, executive director, Ella Baker Center in Oakland, Calif.  The web cast will be shown at 6 p.m. in the Life Sciences Auditorium.

Focus the Nation activities will begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 31 in the Occhiato University Center Ballroom.  The day will be filled with educational presentations, booths and activities.  Live entertainment and door prizes will occur throughout the day.  The Green Democracy round-table discussion will begin at 3:30 p.m.   For more detailed information and directions, visit http://www.focusthenation.org/actionmap/?type=sing&id=1048.
