CSU-Pueblo offers institutional scholarships that don’t have to be repaid and are considered gift aid; these scholarships are another way to keep students’ expenditures down.
Incoming freshmen, continuing students, transfer students and graduate students are encouraged to apply for the 2008-2009 awards.
Scholarships are awarded to students based on several factors which include: merit, financial need and talent. The funds come from the university, foundations, government, private individuals or community organizations.
The 2008-2009 all inclusive scholarship application has a priority deadline of March 1, 2008. That’s right, March 1! It can be accessed online at
www.colostate-pueblo.edu/sfs/scholarships. For more information or help with the application, contact student financial services at sfs@colostate-pueblo.edu.
In addition to the on-line institutional application, students are advised to do a scholarship search and take advantage of all scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are available at the community, state, and national level. Apply for as many scholarships as possible, you may surprise yourself and win more than one.
For example, a great resource for the Pueblo community is the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation. PHEF offers HORISONS scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students. CSU-Pueblo currently has enrolled students receiving this scholarship. HORISONS scholarships are well known to the Pueblo community and promote academic achievement for Hispanics and other minorities. Students may access their application at http://www.phef.net/.
The 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be on the web Jan. 1, 2008 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/, and CSU-Pueblo’s priority funding deadline is Mar. 1, 2008. Students who meet this deadline greatly enhance their chances of getting better financial aid funding (sometimes more money overall, sometimes more free money vs. loans, sometimes both!) and help ensure that their money for fall 2008 will be here for them during the first week of school (vs. later in the semester). Please note that completed tax returns are not required in order to complete the FAFSA.
Colorado in-state undergraduates must also apply for the College Opportunity Fund. COF has no income qualifications, however, students must be an in-state resident and undergraduate, and must apply at http://www.collegeincolorado.org/. This one-time registration will allow students to receive the stipend from the state of Colorado each semester up to 145 credit hours.
Students should be persistent about getting good grades. If your family doesn’t demonstrate financial need, scholarships may be awarded on the basis of academic merit, without regard to need, students who have worked hard and achieved results will be the winners.
Application deadlines are very important. Both applications can be completed after Mar. 1, 2008, but there is no reason to delay either one. Contact Student Financial Services at (719) 549-2753, or stop by to visit them in the Administration Building, Room 212.
