Women’s right to choose, not murder

October 12th, 2007 by Farah Pike

There are numerous joys that develop when a new life is to arrive into the world. In general, a baby is seen as a symbol of a new and precious soul. However, women are choosing to abort unwanted children more and more each day.The issue of abortion was finally brought to the attention of people across the country when a case went to the Unites States Supreme Court for further ruling.

The historical case was Roe v. Wade and it concerned the violation of a woman’s right to due process. The Supreme Court ruled that abortion is a fundamental right under the United States Constitution, and therefore previous laws were attempting to restrict those rights.

Even though a woman’s right to abort her child is protected to an extent, there is further argument on whether or not she is committing murder when choosing to end the pregnancy.

Pro-life advocates agree that once an embryo is created it is a life, but the pro-choice view sees that the unborn is not a life until it is born and outside of the womb and living on its own.

In terms of protecting life and liberty, the fourteenth amendment should be the ticket to protect a fetus in danger of being aborted. However, according to the United States Supreme Court the Constitution was not intended to include the unborn.

While the Constitution does not protect the unborn, there is further debate about where a life begins according to a trimester system.

According to this system, the state cannot restrict a woman’s right to an abortion during the first trimester. However, the state can regulate the abortion procedure during the second trimester if there are any health issues concerning the mother. Also, during the third trimester the state can restrict an abortion as it sees fit because this is the stage when the fetus is viable. If in fact there is a concern for the fetus’ health or the mother’s, then an abortion may be permitted by a credible medical professional.

Even though the government has its own provisions on abortion, society is still at a stalemate on whether or not the act is ethical and moral.

Generally, most religious establishments and right-wing conservatives view abortion as a sin and an immoral decision.

However, the pro-choice side of the debate argues that a woman should always have the right to abort her unborn child if she decides it’s necessary.

With both arguments in mind, which one is right?

Obviously, this issue can only be settled on by individuals because personal opinion is a basis to the choice of abortion.

If a woman feels that an abortion is the only choice for her, then that should be her personal decision and no one else’s. However, the women who abort children because they simply do not want them, is where the adversity sets in.

Pro-life advocates argue that some women choose to use abortion as an emergency birth control, which is completely unethical in their eyes.

However, if a woman is raped or is involved in family incest and becomes pregnant, then she should have the right to choose whether or not the actual birth will be too traumatic of an experience.

In the end, a woman should have the right, and continue to have the right to choose the fate of her unborn child.
