Contest invites public to Thunderwolves football

September 30th, 2007 by Sarah Wolgram

CSU-Pueblo has announced a contest to design uniforms and helmets for the new football team.

The contest was announced by Head Football Coach John Wristen and Athletic Director Joe Folda.

“We want students, faculty, alumni and the citizens of Pueblo, southeastern Colorado and the entire state to become fans of Thunderwolf football and to feel a pride and ownership in our team,” Wristen said.

The competition is open to the public and entries will be accepted until Oct. 31.

The coach and athletic director decided to open the competition to the public “to take advantage of all the excitement regarding football,” said Cora Zalatel, executive director of external affairs, development and communications.

The winning designer will receive a $250 cash prize or a $1000 scholarship to the university and a personalized jersey.

The winner will be decided by a campus committee consisting of Wristen, Folda and Zalatel.

Entries should convey a positive image of strength and the other qualities the coach wants to portray.

“With this design competition, we hope not only to obtain new uniform and helmet designs, but to continue the buzz that has been established in recent months by the hiring of Head Coach John Wristen, former University of Southern Colorado quarterback and the announcement of a campaign to build the Eddie and Neta DeRose ThunderBowl Stadium on campus in time for the first home game,” said Folda.

The winner will be announced by the end of the year. The new football uniforms will be debuted in the Thunderwolves home opener Sept. 6, 2008.

Zalatel said that the external affairs department has received 14 entries as of Sept. 25 and expects to receive around 50.

Designs have been submitted from as far away as Chicago, Zalatel said.

“The good thing about the contest is you don’t have to be athletic to be a part of this, you can be creative and artistic,” Zalatel said.

Designs must include the name Colorado State University-Pueblo or CSU-Pueblo, and can include Pack or Thunderwolves. They should include university colors, red, blue and white.

Entries must be original artwork and cannot be a replica of another team or college.

All entries are subject to modification and refinement and the university reserves the right to modify or manipulate the winning entry to create the final design.

Entries are limited to one per artist and all designs become property of the university.

Designs will not be returned and by submitting an entry, participants agree to all terms of the contest.

Entries should be submitted to:
