Winter Guard debuts at CSU-Pueblo

September 5th, 2007 by Theresa Jiminez

The Winter Guard Sport Organization at CSU-Pueblo is looking to recruit 10 men and women.

Team captain Brandi Swing said she is looking to recruit energetic students and that the team plans to perform and participate in community activities, state-wide parades and competitions in places like Las Vegas and West Palm Beach.

Winter Guard Sport is one of the few activities that doesn’t require a certain gender or height. A Winter Guard Sport Team performs with various pieces of equipment, using dance and acrobatic features. The equipment consists of flags, rifles and sabers which are the main tools used in performances. Winter Guard Team members toss, spin and do much more with their equipment, changing throughout their show. Each show will have a selection of music ranging from classical to contemporary.

“I know working toward that goal will take time. A routine is not an easy thing to learn, yet when you get it, the feeling of accomplishment is well rewarded,” said Swing, who is also the president of the Winter Guard group.

Other officers are Vice President Jerry Herburger, Treasurer Niki Fowler and Secretary Drew Baca.

The mission of Winter Guard is to encourage a positive experience for all students who participate by promoting education, creativity and freedom of self-expression through the association of performing arts. Applications are available in the Biology office located in Life Sciences room 210.
