Personal Commentary: Christmas PC is spiraling out of control
By William J. Dagendesh
Christmas is the day in which the world recognizes the birth of its Heavenly savior, Jesus Christ, and His message of peace and love to humankind.
However, society takes political correctness too far when it encourages people to replace Merry Christmas with happy holiday. Christmas is evolving from a day of worship and reflection to a politically correct, money-making venture where raising big bucks is the name of the game instead of Christ being the reason for the season.
The commercialism is more than I can stand.
Every year society builds up to December 25 starting in late fall. Department stores sell candy and decorations as early as mid-September, and people display lawn decorations as early as Halloween. Most decorations are secular in nature, and even people who claim to be Christian display non-spiritual themes instead of the nativity.
Even the Apostle Peter denied Jesus three times.
Radio stations play Christmas music round-the-clock starting on Thanksgiving Day. Then, after what has been a gradual build-up, decorations come down on Dec. 26, radio stations stop playing the music… and the magic of this festive occasion quickly fades like a sustained note at the end of a song. In short, it is treated like any other holiday.
However, Christmas is more than just any other holiday.
Over the years, society has done its best to remove Christ from human consciousness. It wasn’t long ago people sought to remove the words “Under God” from the pledge of allegiance, prayer in school and the 10 commandments from government buildings. Now we are discouraged from saying Merry Christmas lest we offend someone. Heaven forbid we don’t want to do that.
However, what about offending the millions of people who believe in Christ and wish to keep Christ in Christmas? Is society saying it’s OK to offend Christians as long as Christians don’t offend society? If this is destined to be accepted by society, what is the point of celebrating what is universally regarded as the holiest of days?
Let’s face it, political correctness is spiraling out of control and there seems to be no end in sight. When does it stop?
Personally, I wish these PC-loving bozos would climb down from their self-righteous tower and get a life.
Now, I certainly am no saint, and I believe in separating church and state, and abiding by the laws of the constitution. However, I think it’s time society gives the constitution a rest, takes a hard look at what it has become, and return to the beliefs and morals on which our country was founded.
I believe the more we deny Christ, the more we deny all that is good and just in this world. All you need to do is look around you. Instead of a society that cares about one another, we live in a culture in where sex, violence, money and power have become the way of life.
You can write me a nasty letter if you wish, but there is nothing you can do about it. Christianity and its devout followers are here to stay, so accept it. You can remove “Christ” from people’s mouths, but you cannot remove Him from their hearts.
Perhaps you would like some cheese to go with your whine?
