Weekly Gripe: Too much homework

kristinanew1.jpgDoes it ever feel like your professors got together and decided to make every test on the same day and every paper due the same week?

Sometimes, I definitely feel like that.

I understand we are students at the collegiate level, and I understand that we alone are responsible for our schedules, but every semester, without fail, it seems like the load is always thrown at the same time.

Every year and every semester I have had a week or two where it is a breeze. No homework, no papers and no tests. However, as nice as those couple weeks are, the couple weeks that follow tend to be all tests, all papers and all homework, and they are all due at the same time. And on top of that, your personal life doesn’t just go on vacation.

You still have work; you still have to pay bills. Some still have families to care for, and it all just piles on to the stress.

What is up with that? Why can’t every test, paper and homework be divided evenly throughout the course of the semester? Why does it seem like every class and every professor has teamed up to make a few weeks out of the semester miserable?

Now, I know that the professors don’t really have a grand plan to overload students and stress them out to the extreme, and I understand that many if not most of our professors experienced the same overwhelming workloads when they were students just like us. However, this does not make it any easier.

While the end is in sight for the graduating students of the 2007-2008 school year, at times it seems untouchable. And for the students who are here for their first, second or third years, graduation must seem like light-years away.

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m so close to the end, but the last couple of weeks have been torture. There is so much to do, and it always seems like there is not enough time to do it. Of course, we get it done or we wouldn’t be where we are right now, but at what cost.

The cost is, I’m sure, quite similar for most students. Less eating. Less social time. Less sleep.

I just wish that college could be like the movies. You go to class, you take a nap, you party and then the next day you do it all over again.

However, the reality is that college is stressful and hard, but in the end, the hard work should pay off, eventually. Right?

Let me know if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your work load in school.
